What This Test Includes
Vaginal Swab
The vaginal swab checks for chlamydia, one of the most common bacterial STIs. Chlamydia may not always cause symptoms, so testing can still be useful even if you feel well.
The vaginal swab also screens for gonorrhoea, a bacterial STI that can affect the genital tract and may require treatment if detected.
Mycoplasma genitalium is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection that may be associated with genital symptoms, although some people have no symptoms.
Mycoplasma hominis is a genital tract bacterium that may be assessed as part of broader STI screening where clinically appropriate.
Trichomonas vaginalis is a sexually transmitted infection that can cause vaginal discharge, irritation or discomfort, but may also be present without noticeable symptoms.
Ureaplasma urealyticum is a genital tract bacterium that may be included in extended STI screening panels and interpreted alongside symptoms and clinical history.
The vaginal swab checks for herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 markers from the sampled area. If active sores or blisters are present, swab testing may be particularly useful.
Swab-based syphilis testing may help assess markers from the sampled area where clinically appropriate. Blood testing and medical review may also be recommended depending on symptoms and exposure history.
Chancroid is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection associated with genital ulcers. Testing may be considered where symptoms or exposure history suggest it is appropriate.
