What This Test Includes

Urine Test

Urine testing checks for chlamydia, one of the most common bacterial STIs. Chlamydia may not always cause symptoms, so testing can still be useful even if you feel well.

Urine testing also screens for gonorrhoea, a bacterial STI that can affect the genital tract and urinary system and may require treatment if detected.

Mycoplasma genitalium is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection that may be associated with genital symptoms, although some people have no symptoms.

Mycoplasma hominis is a genital tract bacterium that may be assessed as part of broader STI screening where clinically appropriate.

Trichomonas vaginalis is a sexually transmitted infection that can cause genital discomfort or discharge, but may also be present without noticeable symptoms.

Ureaplasma urealyticum is a genital tract bacterium that may be included in extended STI screening panels and interpreted alongside symptoms and clinical history.

This urine-based panel checks for herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 markers where included in the laboratory screen. If active sores or blisters are present, a swab from the affected area may be more appropriate.

Syphilis testing may help assess markers linked to syphilis infection where clinically appropriate. Blood testing and medical review may also be recommended depending on symptoms and exposure history.

Chancroid is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection associated with genital ulcers. Testing may be considered where symptoms or exposure history suggest it is appropriate.

When Should I Test?

Different infections have different testing window periods. Testing too early may increase the chance of a false negative result.

  • Chlamydia and gonorrhoea: usually most reliable from around 7-14 days after possible exposure
  • Mycoplasma and ureaplasma: commonly detectable from around 10-14 days after possible exposure
  • Trichomonas vaginalis: usually most reliable from around 7-14 days after possible exposure
  • Chancroid and herpes simplex: testing may be most useful when a sore, blister or ulcer is present

For this urine panel, testing is generally most reliable from around 10-14 days after possible exposure. If symptoms are present, testing should not be delayed.

Please note: If you develop symptoms such as discharge, sores, burning, itching, pelvic pain or discomfort when passing urine, testing should not be delayed and medical advice is recommended.

  • Provide first-catch urine where possible
