This is a test for one person

Product description

These tests are required as pre-marriage screening in Bahrain. This is a package of tests specially put together to make this easy to do. It consists of blood tests for the following:

  1. STI test: HIV 1/2, Hepatitis B (HBsAg), Hepatitis C (HCV-ab), Syphilis
  2. Haemoglobin electrophoresis: blood cell examination to test for diseases such as sickle cell and thalassaemia
  3. Full Blood Count
  4. G6PD
  5. Rubella antibodies (IgG)
  6. Blood group and Rhesus type

Why do this test?

These are usually done as a pre-marriage requirement in Bahrain. Sickle cell anaemia, beta thalassaemia and G6PD are inheritable conditions.

There is no problem to the person if they are sickle cell or beta thalassaemia carriers and have only one gene for these. However, if a couple who are both carriers have children, then there is a 1 in 4 chance that their children will have sickle cell disease or beta thalassaemia. That will mean life-long medical care and suffering for the affected children. For this reason, many countries ask their citizens to screen for sickle cell anaemia before they get married in order to avoid having affected children. Please note that having alpha thalassaemia does not give any major medical problems.

G6PD deficiency is also inherited. This means it is passed down from parents through their genes.

Women who carry one copy of the gene can pass G6PD deficiency to their children.

  • Men who get the gene have G6PD deficiency.
  • Women who get the gene are carriers. They often don’t have symptoms. But they can pass the gene onto their children.
