Pre-marriage Screening

We offer premarital test screening packages for the following countries:

  • Iran
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Bahrain
  • Qatar
  • UAE

These packages have been created at the request of our clients, and are more cost-effective than doing the tests individually.

In addition, we offer a testing for sickle cell anaemia and thalassaemia as a stand-alone test. This is used in some countries to know the 'genotype' or 'phenotype' of the blood such as AA, AS or SS.

Please let us know if other tests are also needed as part of the screening process and we will be happy to add these at a discounted cost.

Optional or Mandatory?

In several countries across the Middle East, Africa, and Iran, premarital screening is a mandatory requirement. These countries recognise the importance of these tests in providing vital information to couples before marriage. The aim is to ensure that individuals are aware of any potential medical conditions that could impact not only their own health but also the health of their future children.

Understanding Premarital Screening

Premarital screening, often referred to as a pre-marriage medical test, involves a comprehensive health examination for couples planning to tie the knot. This screening process typically includes blood tests, physical examinations, and sometimes additional tests depending on the country or healthcare provider. While the specific requirements and regulations may vary from place to place, the underlying principle remains the same: to assess and address any potential health concerns before marriage. At STItest.London, we are the leading provider of these tests.

The Cost of Premarital Screening

One common concern is the cost of premarital screening. Couples often wonder if they can afford this additional expense alongside the numerous other wedding preparations. The cost of premarital screening can indeed vary depending on the country, region, and the specific tests required. However, it's essential to view this expenditure as an investment in your future health and happiness. Compared to the potential costs of treating undiagnosed health issues later in life, the expense of premarital screening is relatively small. The cost varies depending on the requirement of individual countries.

Accessing Premarital Screening Services

Premarital screening is currently available at our London Patient Reception only. There is a requirement to bring a form of photographic identification at the time of doing the test. This ensures that individuals and embassies can be sure that the results belong to the right person.

The Significance of Premarital Screening

  1. Early Detection of Health Issues: Premarital screening can identify any underlying health conditions, such as genetic disorders, infectious diseases, or chronic illnesses. Detecting these issues early allows couples to seek treatment or counselling, improving their chances of managing or even overcoming health challenges. In particular, blood disorders such as sickle cell anaemia and thalassaemia are more common in certain countries. If both the couple are carriers, then their children have 1 in 4 chance of having the condition.

  2. Informed Decisions: Knowing each other's health status can help couples make informed decisions about their future. It can also provide a platform for open and honest discussions about potential health concerns and how they may impact the relationship.

  3. Prevention of Transmission: In the case of infectious diseases, premarital screening can help prevent the transmission of diseases between partners, ensuring a healthier and safer union.

  4. Family Planning: Understanding your genetic compatibility and the potential risks of hereditary conditions is crucial when planning to start a family. Premarital screening can provide valuable insights into these matters.

  5. Peace of Mind: Perhaps most importantly, premarital screening offers peace of mind. It can alleviate concerns and reduce anxiety about health-related issues, allowing couples to focus on building a strong foundation for their marriage.

What Premarital Testing Does NOT Test For

Premarital testing does not test for every known genetic disease. That is not possible or practical and doing so would be far too expensive. Instead it is used to screen for common conditions. Of course, extra tests can be added for specific genetic conditions if they are known to exist in the families.

Summary

Premarital screening is not just a formality or mandatory requirement. It's a proactive step towards a healthy and happy married life. While it may require a modest investment, the benefits far outweigh the costs. Early detection and open communication about health-related matters can strengthen a relationship and pave the way for a harmonious and enduring marriage. So, before you say "I do," consider saying "yes" to premarital screening—it's a decision that can positively impact your future together.
