Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) causes 10-35% of STIs (urethritis) in men that are not due to chlamydia or gonorrhoea. The main symptoms are: pain whilst passing urine penile discharge In women, MG causes inflammation of the cervix and pelvic inflammatory disease which may lead to infertility. There was news this week of a British man being the first to be diagnosed with a strain of gonorrhoea which is resistant to all antibiotics that are usually used to treat the disease. Gonorrhoea is an important disease not only because it causes symptoms such as discharge and pain with passing urine, but also because it can cause long term health problems.
