This is a GBS test to detect Group B Streptococcus bacterial infection in women. It is done using a self-administered vaginal swab.
Why do this test? Group B Streptococcus bacterial infection is found in 1 in 5 pregnant women in the UK. It usually does not cause any problems. However, sometimes the GBS infection can be passed to the baby during childbirth and cause serious complications that can be life-threatening. More rarely, GBS infection can cause miscarriage, early (premature) labour or stillbirth. In the UK, GBS infection is not routinely screened for in pregnant women which is why some women like to screen for it proactively.
There is no need for an appointment to do the GBS Test. After paying for the test online, you will receive a confirmation message with a map and directions attached. You can then go to Patient Reception at The Doctors Laboratory to give the sample. The laboratory is open 7am – 7pm weekdays and 7am-1pm on Saturdays.
Time taken: 4 working days *
Results of your GBS Test will be e-mailed to you.
