GBS Test - Group B Streptococcus

chlamydia-swab-testThis is a GBS test to detect Group B Streptococcus bacterial infection in women. It is done using a self-administered vaginal swab.

why-testWhy do this test?  Group B Streptococcus bacterial infection is found in 1 in 5 pregnant women in the UK. It usually does not cause any problems. However, sometimes the GBS infection can be passed to the baby during childbirth and cause serious complications that can be life-threatening. More rarely, GBS infection can cause miscarriage, early (premature) labour or stillbirth. In the UK, GBS infection is not routinely screened for in pregnant women which is why some women like to screen for it proactively.
