Mycoplasma genitalium causes infertility

Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) causes 10-35% of STIs (urethritis) in men that are not due to chlamydia or gonorrhoea. The main symptoms are:

  • pain whilst passing urine
  • penile discharge

In women, MG causes inflammation of the cervix and pelvic inflammatory disease which may lead to infertility. The main symptoms in women are:

  • vaginal discharge
  • pain whilst passing urine
  • pain whilst having sexual intercourse
  • abdominal pain

However. in common with other STIs, there may be no symptoms at all which is why it is important to take precautions using barrier methods, and get tested.
